Downtown Edmonton is the place to be for entrepreneurs, go-getters, students and those who love the convenience of real city-life.

Originally, a settlement established by The Hudson Bay Company in 1795, called Edmonton House became the first permanent settlement and Trading Post in what would later be incorporated into the City of Edmonton in 1905. Jasper Avenue was the first Main Street of Edmonton and was established in the 1800’s as nothing more than a dirt road with some businesses on either side. In the 1880’s private individuals were finally allowed to purchase and develop land (previously an exclusive right of the Hudson’s Bay Co.) along Jasper Avenue, it was during this time that the area boomed in housing, business and population. You can learn more about the city’s history here.

Today, Jasper Avenue is the booming business centre of the city. Almost all the important government buildings are located here or just off of Jasper Ave, including Jasper Place and the Ministry of Finance.  The downtown core is also home to a major influx of residential buildings that are almost exclusively high-rise condominiums. The newly planned Arena District has reinvigorated interest in the area, not just with developers, but for the city and established businesses too. The city has been redesigning the roadways, walkways and fascia of many buildings in the area in order to update the core’s appearance. Businesses have been following suit by modernizing their establishments and curb appeal to match the new vision of the area.

Living downtown means immediate access to workplaces, shopping centres, entertainment districts, educational institutions, fine dining and cultural and recreational facilities. If apartment-style living is something you like, this is the place to be!

Amenities Near Downtown Edmonton

This list is almost too extensive to begin but some features of the downtown core include The City Centre Shopping Mall, Grant McEwan University, NAIT, The Shaw Conference Centre, Oliver Square, and the new Arena which will house the City’s NHL team, the Edmonton Oilers. Construction will begin in the spring of 2014.

Living at the cities centre makes everything reasonably accessible. Whether you are jetting off to the airport, heading to see family on the north side, wanting to shop at West Edmonton Mall or planning to take in the delights of Whyte Avenue, it is all easy to get to from here.

Why Live in Downtown Edmonton?

It is the place to be to feel the heartbeat of the city. If you like the idea of having the hottest restaurant in town right outside your front door, then the downtown is for you. A major benefit of living here is that you don’t need personal transportation. You can walk anywhere you need to go, hail a cab if you’re too tired or hop on a bus to get from one end of Jasper Avenue to the next.

It is the ultimate in convenience and the best way to be on the edge of every trend, market, festival and hoopla the city has to offer; and in Edmonton, there is a lot of that all year round.
