History of the Ellerslie Neighbourhood

Ellerslie began being built in the early 2000’s with only small pockets of unfinished residential areas existing as late as 2008.

Located in the Southeast of the City, Ellerslie offers quick and convenient access to Ellerslie Road South, the Anthony Henday North Bound and 66 Avenue. This established neighbourhood includes country estates in the Eastern section and is home to many small parks and mature trees. There are many walking paths that join the parks together and offer leisurely walking routes for residents.

When Ellerslie was planned, developers wanted to take advantage of not only the natural amenities of the area but also the major transportation facilities, as well as commercial and industrial areas. Considered a ‘Neighbourhood Unit,’ Ellerslie school and park features are located at the centre of the community, which is predominantly comprised of single-family homes, but includes row houses and apartment-style condos.

According to the City of Edmonton’s Community Profile, “Ellerslie is the name that’s been used to designate this area since the turn of the 20th century. Some sources indicate that the name was likely derived from the Ellerslie House, believed to be the birthplace of William Wallace, a Scottish insurgent against Edward I of England. Other sources believe this area was named by the brothers John and James McLaggan, owners of the first store and post office in the area, after a character in a novel by Sir William Scott. The Ellerslie School District was established in 1895 and the post office began operating in 1896.”

 Ellerslie Homeowner’s Association (HOA)

Instead of a Homeowner’s Association, Ellerslie has a Community League. This very involved league oversees the community of Ellerslie and Charlesworth, helping to organize important community events, as well as offering volunteer opportunities.

Membership is voluntary but it does give you a voice within the community. With initiatives such as a Neighbourhood Watch, park projects and fundraising opportunities, the Ellerslie Community League is a great way to get involved in your community and help better it.
