History of the Rutherford Neighbourhood

Rutherford was first developed in the mid 2000’s as part of the larger Heritage Valley development, and is named for Alexander Cameron Rutherford (1857-1941) who was the first Premier of Alberta when a majority Liberal government was elected in 1905. Rutherford was designed to accommodate a mixture of low and medium density housing units with space for recreational activities, institutional and commercial land uses. The extensive pedestrian network throughout the neighbourhood is an important design feature, with a utility corridor that diagonally runs the length of the community. This corridor provides an important pedestrian spine which connects the various walkways to activity nodes dispersed throughout the community.

There are a variety of parks and the Virginia Park Woodland that create focal points in the neighbourhood. It has its own school in the South central aspect of the community and is surrounded on all sides by other residential communities. Ellerslie Road is the nearest major roadway for the neighbourhood, whose enclosed nature gives it additional safety for children via reduced traffic and speeds.

West Rutherford Homeowner’s Association (HOA)

There is an HOA in place for West Rutherford although in order to access their website, you must be registered and be a resident. To discover if you are purchasing a home governed by the West Rutherford HOA, ask your real estate agent to check the title.
