Whyte Avenue and University Areas

History of Whyte Avenue and University Areas

Whyte Avenue is an arterial road in south-central Edmonton, which became the main street of the City of Strathcona as it formed. It now runs through Old Strathcona and was named in 1891 after Sir William Whyte, who was superintendent of the CPR's western division from 1886 to 1897 and was knighted by King George V in 1911.

Currently, Whyte Avenue runs through many communities including Kenilworth, Idylwylde, Bonnie Doon and Queen Alexandra. Whyte Avenue is home to many owner-operated small businesses that have been in place for decades. Its historic atmosphere lends to the value of living in the area but the fact that it is considered the heart of arts and entertainment in the City, is also a big draw for residents.

University Avenue was also an arterial road in west Strathcona, and was formed along the backs of farm lots West of the yet to be incorporated town of Strathcona. It runs parallel with the North Saskatchewan River to the north and the farm lots later became the University of Alberta campus, established in 1908.

University Avenue intersects several communities as well, including Windsor Park, McKernan and Belgravia, to name a few.
