This neighbourhood was named after James F. Falconer, who was involved in the formation of Edmonton’s Names Advisory Committee in the mid 1950s and who served on the committee until 1979. Mr. Falconer was also a school board trustee, and served on various city boards and civic committees for 27 years. Urban residential development in Falconer Heights started in 1985, with the majority (87.8%) of homes built in the 1990’s. About 80% of all residences are occupied by owners while the rest are leased or rented out. Prior to urban development this area was used for agricultural cultivation.
While the neighbourhood is predominantly a residential community, Falconer Heights provides for several other land uses within its borders. The housing mix is about half single-detached and half other low- to medium-density residential unit types. Falconer Heights is bound by Rabbit Hill Road to the north, Riverbend Road to the west, and Terwillegar Drive to the east; the southern boundary is defined by a private utility right-of-way, which separates Falconer Heights from the Haddow neighbourhood to the south.
In the northeast portion of the neighbourhood, the Riverbend Square commercial area provides a range of shops and services, including a major supermarket chain as a central anchor, which can easily be accessed by neighbourhood residents and which also serves the population of surrounding neighbourhoods within the Riverbend area. There is no school site located within Falconer Heights, but there is a large school/park site adjacent to Henderson Estates; no school has been developed on the site yet. There are, however, two elementary schools located nearby in the Rhatigan Ridge neighbourhood to the north. Located just outside the neighbourhood of Falconer Heights, is the Terwillegar Community Rec Centre providing many programs and a large pool area with slide, hot tubs, steam room, swimming lanes, wave pool, circular maze/running area, ball diamonds, and soccer fields. There are about 17 restaurants, bars and coffee shops in Falconer Heights. Residents of Falconer Heights can walk to an average of 1 restaurants, bars and coffee shops in 5 minutes. Falconer Heights is the 82nd most walkable neighbourhood in Edmonton of 272, with a Walk Score of 52.
This mature neighbourhood, offers ample green space perfect for walking your pets or letting the kids play outside. A natural area, which features a mature tree stand, was preserved as a park in the southeast corner of the neighbourhood, offering green space for residents to enjoy. The internal road network is based on a series of cul-de-sacs oriented along a collector road (Falconer Road), with arterial roads located along the neighbourhood’s boundaries. The roadway design was intended to keep traffic flow to a minimum, and allow for a traffic calmed neighbourhood. Close to amenities, this neighbourhood has everything one needs to enjoy life in the city of Edmonton.
